How to prime a conversation

Posted Posted in Business Coaching, Coaching, Online Training, Resilience

For a long time now psychologists have noted the importance of warm physical contact between children and their caregivers. Researchers at Yale discovered something really interesting about the importance of temperatures in adults – and specifically how holding a hot or cold drink can affect behaviour and attitude. This is backed up by neuroscience and brain imagery, so it’s based on solid evidence. There is a new video this week in the ‘You Have What You Need‘ section of The Resilience Hub that explains this and how you can use this to your advantage to prepare for a difficult conversation at home or at work. If you haven’t yet signed up for the Hub you can do so via the links in this post.  Why not?  It’s FREE! Until next week, take care, Lisa.       Image credit:  Alexandru Stavrica via Unsplash

Your brain’s super-highway

In this post I am going to introduce you to your Corpus Callosum. This is the bridge network that connects the two hemispheres of your brain – the right creative side – and the left analytical side.  It integrates the motor, sensory and cognitive functions of your brain. Corpus Callosum is Latin for ‘Tough Body’ and that’s appropriate because it’s the largest connective pathway of our brain.  It’s even shaped like a letter ‘C’ – C for Corpus Callosum. It starts forming in the brain about 12 weeks after conception, although its development can be disrupted as early as 6 weeks into the pregnancy by things like rubella, if the mother consumes a lot of alcohol or a gene that sometimes causes malformation. It is mostly developed by the time we are 12 years old.  It was only discovered by scientists as recently as the 1950s. It plays an important […]

Succeed without burning out.

Do you find yourself having great ideas for your business when you are at traffic lights or in the shower, but then get caught up in the busyness of business and life? Days, weeks and months go by and the idea remains just a wishful thought.  For various reasons you haven’t been able to take it any further. If you are serious about wanting to make changes to progress and to move up a level you need to hire a coach. Your coach is an invisible partner in your business, a sounding board that’s safe and confidential, helping you to see things with fresh eyes, helping you overcome any blocks or self-limiting beliefs you have (we all have!) that hold you back, and holding you accountable so that you actually take the necessary steps and move forward. Maybe you have thought of hiring a coach but you’re worried that your […]

Readers who have subscribed to The Resilience Hub will find a brand new section in there today, called ‘You Have What You Need‘ This will be a collection of short videos explaining some aspect of your human physiology that’s in place already, that you may not know is there, that you can harness to build resilience and manage stress, and that you can use to your advantage. The beauty of this is that you don’t need to have a certain level of education or IQ.  You don’t need to be any particular personality type.  You don’t even need money in your pocket.  You have all of these, built in since you were born. The first video in this series has been posted today so if you haven’t yet signed up to The Resilience Hub yet you can do so via this link. (It’s in the free section for the moment). […]

Switch!

One of the biggest challenges we face in building our confidence and resilience is… ourselves! Our negative self-talk is possibly the most disempowering aspect of our mind.  It’s an extension of our survival instinct, honed over millions of years of evolution. Our mind is always watching out for danger.  In today’s world actual life and death situations thankfully rarely occur, so when it can’t identify a danger easily, it looks harder. When it still can’t find anything to be properly scared of, it makes stuff up, exaggerates small things and remains on high alert because it doesn’t like having nothing to focus on. The part of the brain that does this is the amygdala.  It serves us sometimes (like when we jump out of the way of an oncoming car before we consciously realise what’s happening).  But it needs to be trained and reassured. With practice we can teach our highly […]

Why we get sick on first day of holidays

Posted Posted in Business Coaching, Coaching, Resilience

Have you ever gone on holidays, and spent the first few days sick? There are many reasons for this but one cause is the stress of working harder to finish up before our time off. We’re in a state of well-being when there is a gentle ebb and flow of hormones. Small amounts of stress are beneficial: – cortisol helps us to metabolise cholesterol – and adrenaline fights off cold viruses With small amounts our body bounces back easily. But, when we have excessive stress our body loses its balance and bounces back too far at first, and our immune system drops. When our immune system dips (like when we are tired, undernourished, sleep deprived or when we let our body temperature drop) we are more susceptible to viruses like the cold virus and flu virus.  Airplanes are also notorious spaces for catching viruses because lots of us are in a […]

Are you a business owner? This week I posted a very short video on Facebook each day with one positive action you can take that day to spark more energy in yourself, your business and your leadership. Move towards business success every day. Until next week, take care! Lisa.

Do you need to reassure yourself?

Last week I had a coffee and lovely chat with a business colleague who is also a nurse and now runs her own business.  We were joking about the first aid kits we carry around – like most nurses we carry around band-aids and other bits and bobs – not in case we need it but in case someone else does! It’s something we identified as a symptom of nurses, teachers and others who are in caring professions or who have responsibility for others. These are people who often burn out because they look after everyone else before themselves, and it got me thinking about first aid kits because I often recommend to my coaching clients that they have an emotional first aid kit which is a set of go-to things or people to lean on when we are feeling emotionally hurt, overwhelmed or stressed. I’ve created a video about […]

No-one can give you confidence – they cannot take it either

Confidence is a soft skill that is transferable to every part of our lives. When we don’t feel confident we lose out on opportunities for business development and/or personal growth. The only person who has ultimate control over your confidence is you.  Just as no-one can give it to you, no-one can take it away from you either, unless you let them. Our inner critic is usually the one thing that affects our confidence the most. We all need to learn to silence our inner critic, or ignore it. We think we have competition from other people, but there is a wonderful reminder doing the rounds on social media that says: “Your competition isn’t other people.  Your competition is: Your procrastination. Your Ego. Unhealthy food you’re consuming. The knowledge you neglect to learn. Negative behaviour you’re nurturing. Your lack of creativity.” Confidence would eliminate most of these toxic blocks. My […]

When you take on too much

Busy people often don’t think they have time for coaching. But there’s coaching principle called ‘Pausing for Performance’… …and the best example of how it works is think how you’d feel if you worked all day and through the night.  How productive would you be the following day? If you have ever woken up refreshed after sleep or a nap or if you have ever had a great idea in the shower or at traffic lights – that’s because actually your brain has been allowed to pause for performance and you can see how that has given you new motivation, commitment, new insights/ideas and vision, clarity and renewed energy. I usually try to practise what I preach – usually! – but a few weeks ago I had a lot on my plate, I took on more and said yes to too many things. Then something of reasonable importance fell out of my […]
