Time Management for busy Healthcare Professionals

Posted Posted in Awakening, Coaching, Resilience

How is your work/life balance these days? Did you just snort in total exasperation?! Medical Journals, blogs and my colleagues on the front line of healthcare are increasingly referring to the fact that Healthcare Professionals are at breaking point, burnt out, working harder than ever, doing longer hours but earning less, seeing exasperated patients who have been waiting for longer than usual, often not having enough time to do an examination as thoroughly as they’d like, let alone to do a personalised plan of care or to take on additional challenges like multimorbidity and polypharmacy. I spend a lot of my working week helping people to really examine their time management, so that they can step outside their hurly burly days for an hour or so in the safe space of coaching, see the overall picture, evaluate and refocus so that they live a life of controlled purpose each day.  Regularly, and […]

Day 5 of our 5 day series of information/coaching inspired posts about a Career in Practice Nursing. Today I challenge you to SWOT it! There is nothing like a good old SWOT analysis to help with clarity on a decision. Get a piece of paper and divide it into four. Label each square as follows: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats – and fill each section in with all the thoughts you have and also include anything that has come up for you during this week’s series. What stands out for you?  What would you like to gather more information on? What would you like to ask us or discuss at the workshop? I hope you have liked this week’s series.  As I mentioned at the start, it’s just a small taste of what will be covered in the workshop so make sure you book your spot before they are all gone. […]

Day 4 of our 5 day series of information/coaching inspired posts about a Career in Practice Nursing. As promised yesterday, today’s topic is about an issue frequently raised by nurses in all sectors – Managing Conflict Earlier in the series I mentioned conflict at work and I asked you to think about whether it’s this that is the main driver behind a desire to move from your current nursing position.  I also mentioned that this series and the workshops I am co-hosting with Jane Campion have been designed from a neutral standpoint – that is we want to give you all the information you need so that any decision you make on whether to pursue a career in Practice Nursing – or not – is based on facts.  We aren’t going to try to persuade you one way or the other. Ask yourself and be honest with the answer – […]

Day 3 of our 5 day series of information/coaching inspired posts about a Career in Practice Nursing. What Practice Nurses say. In today’s post, I’m sharing some insights into what Practice Nurses regularly say about their roles and Practice Nursing as a speciality of nursing. I worked in the Practice Nursing world for 15 years so I have heard many Practice Nurses speak about what they love about their job as well as what they don’t like so much, and I thought you’d like to hear a bit of both here. Practice Nurses who report loving their jobs will say that the opportunity to get to know practice populations and whole extended families over months and years is one of the most fulfilling parts of their job. Practice Nurses who aren’t happy usually cite unfavourable Terms and Conditions as the main reason, but it’s important to note that Ts & […]

Day 2 of our 5 day series of information/coaching inspired posts about a Career in Practice Nursing The topic for today is…What is your personal work preference? Many Practice Nurses love their jobs and remain in post for years, but it’s not for everyone.  If your work preference is to be in the thick of dealing with medical or surgical emergencies, you should acknowledge this, own it and love yourself for it.  If you would prefer to get to know your patients over a longer period of time, it’s important to find a role that serves this purpose and allows you to do this in order to achieve better work fulfilment.  What’s fulfilling for one person will be less so for another, so think about what will help you to feel fulfilled. Here are two questions to think about today and it may help to actually write down the answers: […]

Coaching Your Child in Hospital

If you have ever had a child in A&E or a hospital ward, you will know that what they need is distraction.  Something – anything – to take their mind off the pain and the fright about what is happening to them. If you were to approach this with a ‘coaching’ hat on, your conversations with your child would be based on more questions than statements, to encourage the child to engage the creative and verbal parts of their brain.  Give your child plenty of time to find the words they need. Here is a download that just might help.  It’s quite a busy document but all the better to keep a little one amused.  It can be filled in by the child or the parent.   The aim is to help your child to build their resilience by: Focusing on familiar and fun details of their life. Helping them […]

Stay Calm and Rock that Exam

Posted Posted in Coaching, exams, Parenting, Resilience

Exam stress is often reported to be one of the biggest challenges for teenagers and young people today, although this has been the case for past generations too so it’s nothing new.  No matter what age we are or where we are in our careers, all adults remember what it was like to face big exams, especially state examinations.  However, if you are a student reading this, the stress you are feeling is new to you, and current.  You may have felt sure of yourself in other areas of your life up to now, but somehow any confidence you have felt during school terms or when doing short assignments seems to have evaporated. Do you see others in your class ‘effortlessly’ getting through exams?  Have you ever looked at someone on the TV, or on stage or at an event, speaking fluently and articulately, and thought “Wow, I wish I […]
